The first few years of any tree are crucial. Developing good root structure below ground as well as good form and structure above ground that will support them through their life.
This is particularly true for fruit trees, which can thrive in Auckland.
In the first year after planting your tree, remove the lower branches and try and create a central leader so that growth is encouraged from the top. Always stake the tree for extra support.
The 2nd year could be the time to decide how high you want your tree to be and encourage the upper framework to about 7-8 branches. This may depend on the age of the tree when you make the purchase., many of which are already 1 1/2 meters tall. Check stakes and particularly ties to ensure they are not cutting into the bark and loosen or replace as required.
Annually remove crossing branches or any branch unions that are likely to lead to branch inclusion and a weak area. In fruit trees, you are looking to make a goblet shape with the internal branches removed for good airflow and light penetration. Check if your stakes can be removed after 2 years because you want the tree to develop its own supporting root structure. This becomes critical in times of wild weather as we have seen in Auckland and the damage done to the trees.
Ensure you plant your tree where the fruit can actually ripen in the sun and always mulch around the tree to protect the roots and suppress the weeds.
With all that done you can sit back and enjoy the bounty.
