Pittosporum care

Pittosporum trees are a fantastic addition to gardens to use as a hedge, privacy screen, and landscape feature.

There are many different varieties with different leaf shape and colour. They can be clipped into all sorts of shapes and respond well to light trimming which encourages vigor and keeps the growth tight and not too spindly.

The “golf balls” are very popular and on-trend currently. They make a great statement when they are planted in groups or in a row. Keep these plants clipped regularly to maintain a good tight shape ideally 3-4 times a year.

Pittosporum can be reduced if need be, but there is a high risk of failure as the tree ages. It is much better to proactively maintain them by trimming to fit the space in the garden and eliminate the need to trim aggressively.

Make sure they have good drainage as they do not like wet feet and they like plenty of light.

Younger plants would appreciate feeding annually during the spring flush.

They can be susceptible to insect infestations and even fungal issues, so if they show signs of damage or decline, manage the problem promptly with insecticides or fungicides and repeat as per the instructions.
